This quarter, we will jointly explore topics of interest in fields
as diverse as psychology, sociology, history, languages, politics, economics
and more. Language arts study has no limitations, for it is concerned with
fostering proficiency in the consumption and production of written and spoken
ideas; therefore, the reading and writing you do this quarter will be wide-ranging
in scope and challenging in content.
Your goal, with my assistance, is to become the best writer and
reader you can. Toward that end, you'll write and think and read and analyze
and discuss and rewrite and rethink a lot. You'll flex your brain and hand
muscles as you ask questions, define issues, and write responses to what
you've read. Writing and reading well is hard work. Stick with it. Try hard.
Seek help from me and your fellow students. Make the most of the on-line
environment to build a supportive community of learners who assist each other
in a common goal of developing their language abilities.
My goal is to share knowledge with you, to discover your particular
reading and writing needs as individuals, and to ensure that you get from
EWRT 1A what I and you expect--namely, a growing appreciation for the power
and utility of language, and a growing capacity to wield language as a tool
for intellectual, social, and economic self-empowerment.
