EWRT 1A COURSE CALENDAR



GENERAL PATTERN OF INTERACTION

It will help you with scheduling to understand the pattern or flow of the course assignments and interactions. In general, interaction proceeds along the following lines:

Essays in the Borzoi Readerby the authors and biographical information about them on the web site are to be read by Tuesday of each week.

Chat room discussions of the assigned reading material every Wednesday from 7-10pm on the Connections MOO

Analysis/Discussion of Model Student Essays, Writing Assignments, and Writing Issues (sentence structure, grades on papers, etc.) held on Thursday through Saturday using the course listserv (sheftman@onelist.com) and bulletin boards.

Online quizzes and credit assignments are also due during each week. For online quizzes, I will email you the URL of the web site which contains the quiz. Credit assignments must be turned in by the duedate or they will receive a no credit.

Drafts of essays typically due every Monday and rewrites of essays due one week after I return the drafts via email. REMINDER: 1) Drafts are optional but highly encouraged. 2) I do NOT accept late papers for the final graded version.

NOTE: The course calendar may change. I will notify you well in advance via the listserv of any changes in due dates or assignments. Be sure to check your email each day. You might want to print out a copy of the calendar for easy reference.

WEEK 1: Annie Dillard By 4-11: 1) Read pages xix-xxvii in the Borzoi Reader--Tips on Being an Effective Reader of Essays. 2) Read on the web site the biographical notes about Dillard and the essay "Living Like Weasels" (from the homepage, click on the Reading Material link, then the image of Dillard).

4-12: Discussion of Dillard's essay from 7:00-10:00pm on the MOO

For 4-13: From the Dillard page on the web site: 1) Read the ESSAY #1 writing assignment description. 2) Read the first and second model student essay responses. 3) Read the Credit Assignment #1 instructions. Credit Assignment #1 due by 8:00pm on 4-13

4-13 to 4-15: Listserv exchanges about Credit assignment #1, the writing assignment for essay #1, the model student essays, and other writing related topics such as grading standards, grammar and sentence structure, etc.

On 4-17 no later than 8:00pm: Email your draft of ESSAY #1

On 5-1 no later than 8:00pm: Submit by email your final version of ESSAY #1

NOTE: Before writing your draft of essay #1, be sure to: 1) Select the Writing Tips link from the homepage and read the contents. 2) Select the Statement on Plagiarism link from the homepage and read the contents. 3) Select the Sentence Structure Review and Practice link from the homepage and read the contents.

WEEK 2 : George Orwell and James Baldwin By 4-18: 1) Read in the Borzoi Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" on p. 527 and Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son" on p. 332, and the biographical info on the authors on the web site under the Orwell/Baldwin link. 2) Under the Orwell/Baldwin link on the web site, read the Credit Assignment #2 directions.

4-20 to 4-22: Participate in listserv exchanges about the credit assignment #2, the essay #2 writing assignment, the sample student essay responses, and other writing related topics such as grading, grammar, etc.

On 4-24 no later than 8:00pm: Submit by email your draft of ESSAY #2 and post to the Orwell/Baldwin forum your stage model: NOTE: I will not read drafts without an accompanying stage model!

On 5-8 no later than 8:00pm: Submit by email your final version of ESSAY #2

WEEK 3: Bosmajian, Rau, and Supplemental Readings By 4-25: 1) Read in the BorzoiBosmajian's "The Language of Oppression" on p. 151 and Rau's "By Any Other Name" on p. 146, and the biographical info on the authors on the web site under the Bosmajian/Rau link. 2) Under the Bosmajian/Rau link on the web site, read the four short Supplemental Readings
